Maggie Cole

Virtual Vocalist & Human Sound Lab Creative Experiment

Maggie Cole is a virtual singer created with generative AI. She has a voice, a name, and a musical identity, but she isn't human.

Maggie is also part of a larger intellectual and creative exploration.

Through Human Sound Lab, my research initiative examining human creativity, agency, and authorship in an increasingly technological musical landscape, I'm interested in questions that extend well beyond whether artificial intelligence can produce convincing music.

Who is the artist when a machine produces the sound?

Where does human creativity reside when musical expression is mediated by algorithms?

What constitutes authorship, and how do we distinguish between creative intention, technological execution, and artistic interpretation?

Maggie offers a practical way to explore these questions.

Throughout history, musicians have used technology to extend their creative capabilities, from musical notation and mechanical instruments to recording technology, synthesisers, digital audio workstations, and now generative AI.

Each development has challenged existing assumptions about what it means to create and perform music.

Maggie belongs to that continuing conversation.

Her voice is synthetic. Her musical identity is deliberately constructed. The creative process involves human decisions and technological contributions, and their respective roles deserve examination rather than assumption.

I don't present Maggie as a human singer, nor do I suggest that she possesses consciousness, emotions, or independent artistic intentions.

Instead, I see her as an opportunity to explore a fundamental question:

When technology becomes capable of producing the sounds we associate with human expression, what does that reveal about the nature of creativity itself?

Maggie Cole is both a musical project and an invitation to explore that question.
